Sedation Dentists Banish Fear of the Dentist for Countless People

By Donald Saunders

For almost 30 to 40 million people in the US alone almost nothing at all can come close to the fear of the dental surgery. For a large number of of us that terrifying experience, encountered first as kids, stays with us for the remainder of our lives and a visit to the surgery is something we only think about when the very worst of tooth ache leaves us with no other alternative.

There are numerous reasons for steering clear of the dental office including an immunity to standard dental painkilling injections, a fear of needles, a fear of the dentist's drill, a basic fear of the dentist, and difficulty in sitting still or controlling your movements to name a few.

Nowadays, however, the advent of sedation dentists permits us to get the dental treatment that we need without that anxiety and those fears.

Sedation dentists don't knock patients out altogether, but put them into a very relaxed state so that they do not feel the slightest pain from the work being carried out and, invariably, don't even remember the work being performed.

There are a range of choices available to the patient including:

  • Nitrous oxide - Nitrous oxide gas (also called laughing gas) is employed to stimulate a relaxed state. A local anaesthetic will be employed together with nitrous oxide to eliminate pain.
  • Intravenous sedation - In this case an injection is given to the patient, as an alternative to a pill. As with oral sedation this method doesn't provide pain relief, so an injection of local anaesthetic will also be employed.
  • Oral sedation - The patient takes a pill roughly one hour before the dental appointment. Oral sedatives act to relax the patient but without providing pain relief, so an injection of local anaesthetic is also employed.
  • General anaesthesia - In the case of general anaesthesia an injection is given to the patient to render them unconscious. As the patient is unconscious, a local anaesthetic is not needed to eliminate pain.

Sedation can be used for quick and simple procedures lasting up to an hour, or for more elaborated multiple treatments, where sedation may last for as long as perhaps six hours.

The advent of sedation dentists is perhaps one of the biggest improvements to dental care in recent years and permits dentists to undertake treatment on patients who would not otherwise think about having treatment.

People who avoid dental work because of fear and anxiety need no longer worry as sedation dentists have made this vital element of our health care system accessible to all.
