How to Get Rid of Bad Breath by Avoiding These Foods

By David Harper

Millions of people are suffering from chronic bad breath and wonder how to get rid of their bad breath by avoiding certain foods that many of us consume daily. The good news is that you can dramatically improve your breath just by avoiding or cutting back on certain foods that produce volatile sulfur compounds in your mouth and throat. We are going to take a look at some of these foods and what you should be avoiding to stop bad breath from forming.

The first thing you want to do is avoid any food or beverage that will dry out your mouth. Since bad breath thrives in an anaerobic environment, any drink or food that will dry out your mouth will create the perfect condition for bad breath to form in. One thing that you need to avoid is alcohol, because this is a drying agent. You should also avoid any over the counter mouthwash that contains alcohol in it as an active ingredient.

Another thing you want to avoid is any food that has a high protein content. This is especially true for dairy which is known for making bad breath problems worse. The problem with foods that are high in protein is that you get a buildup of amino acids. These acids are easily converted into volatile sulfur compounds which are responsible for making bad breath odor.

The next bad breath culprit on the list is sugar. This is why you should not use mints, chewing gum and other so called breath mints because all they are really doing is masking your bad breath and not getting rid of it. On top of the sugar making your breath worse, it also will make your teeth decay which will lead to gum disease and gingivitis and make your problem even worse.

Our last food that we should look out for is acidic foods. The reason is that your mouth normally maintains a normal acidity level and if this gets too high it can make bacteria in your mouth produce faster in the acidic environment. You need to avoid certain juices like pineapple juice, orange juice, and grapefruit juice which can lead to acid levels rising and formation of volatile sulfur compounds responsible for halitosis.

How to get rid of bad breath is a battle which can be won. With just a few diet changes and a good oral hygiene regimen, you will be able to enjoy fresh breath again and never have a doubt in your mind again about your breath. Millions of people all over the world suffer from bad breath and many times it can be treated with a simple change in your diet instantly.
