TEETH WHITENING

Teeth whitening (bleaching) has become increasingly popular over the last decade. It is no longer reserved just for those people that are in the public eye. There are two types of teeth whitening procedures that are commonly used by cosmetic dentists. The most common procedure has been around for quite some time and involves in-home use of a bleaching gel and custom fitted trays. The second type of teeth whitening procedure employed by dentists involves in-office use of a highly concentrated bleaching gel which is activated by a laser or power light.

What is the Procedure for In-Home Bleaching?

At the dentist's office, a plaster model of the teeth is made from an impression. This model is used to make a custom fitted mouth tray. At home, a solution of 10%, 16%, or 22% carbamide peroxide is placed in the mouth tray and worn for a specific amount of time. The 10% solution is weaker and needs to be worn for at least 6 hours each day. This solution can be worn over night. However, the 22% solution is very strong and can't be worn more than 1 hour each day.

How long does the In-Home Bleaching Procedure Take to Achieve Desired Results?

The procedure usually takes from 2-4 weeks to achieve maximum results. The dentist will monitor the gums and teeth weekly.

How is the In-Office Laser Procedure Done?

Are Teeth Whitening Procedures Permanent?

No, Your teeth will naturally discolor over time. Most people need to repeat the procedure every 1-2 years; this should be done under a dentist's care so that the gums and teeth may be monitored. The custom fitted mouth tray for the in-home system can be reused.

How Much can Teeth Whitening Procedures Lighten my teeth?
