BRACES
Once upon a time, only preteens or teenagers were getting braces. Not
so anymore. Now, adults can also have the option of using braces to
correct crooked teeth. Younger children are also getting braces- even
as young as 7 or 8 years old. Orthodontists have learned that they can
expand the soft palate of a young child before it fuses. This early
intervention can negate the need for the pulling of adult teeth down
the road. Advancements have also been made in how braces look. Now
people can choose metal, clear, multicolored, or invisible braces.
Children and teenagers now enjoy changing the look of their mouth each
time they go to the orthodontist for adjustments. Much has been done to
ease the awkwardness of having braces. What are the Types of Braces?
- Ceramic braces - these are clear, more expensive than metal braces, but they are also more brittle.
- Linguinal braces - these are more expensive than metal braces. They are put on the inside of the teeth and are usually more difficult to adapt to than metal braces.
- Invisalign - These are removable, snap on plastic trays that are custom fitted. The trays are changed every two weeks to help the teeth move into a new position. They are used only on those people who have a good bite and good jaw movement.
- Traditional braces - Theses are adjusted every six weeks. Brackets are bonded to teeth and adjusted using attached wires.
How Long Must Braces be Worn?
Typically, braces must be worn 2-2 1/2 years. Removable braces are usually worn longer.
Are There any Special Considerations?
Yes, TMJ may be triggered or worsened by orthodontia use. Also, at first, you will have some physical discomfort and possibly some social awkwardness.
How Long do the Results From Braces Last?
Teeth can shift after braces are removed. However, most orthodontists follow up with a retainer which is to be worn for a specified time. Another option to consider after removal of braces is to have a bonded retainer put in place. This type of retainer can stay in place for many years.
How Much do Braces Cost?
Cost depends on the type of braces used. Cost can range anywhere from $4000 to $9000. Many major medical and dental insurance plans are now offering coverage for orthodontia.Cosmetic Dentists: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Washington D.C., West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming
