CEREC: Revolutionary New Technology Eliminates Time Spent at the Dentist

By Marvin Pantangco, DDS

In the past, a cosmetic dentistry procedures such as veneers and porcelain crowns used to require you to have at least two visits to your dentist. Aside from that, you also need to wait for a certain period of time before your dental restorations can be made- typically 2 to 3 weeks.

Thanks to the newest CEREC technology, restoring the normal appearance of your teeth is easy. You can now enjoy the convenience of having custom-fitted porcelain crowns, veneers and fillings in just a single visit.

What is CEREC?

CEREC stands for Chairside Restoration of Esthetics Ceramics. The primary aim is to give the patients the choice of having their dentistry completed in one visit, not 2 or 3. The result is a number of cosmetic dental restorations completed in a matter of minutes or hours, not days or weeks.

Why CEREC is Popular

CEREC uses the latest CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/ Computer Aided Machinery) technology and can construct porcelain veneers, crowns, inlays, and onlays in just a single visit. This means you can have a better-looking teeth fast!

How is it done? It is done using a computer-aided model and an optical impression. The cosmetic dentist can make an optical impression by painting the tooth using a titanium dioxide powder. The powder enables the infrared waves from the camera to see the exact contours of the tooth. Because of this, a high resolution optical impression of your teeth is achieved. Then, a virtual replica of the tooth is displayed on a monitor beside the chair.

Before starting the procedure, your teeth will be evaluated to identify the best treatment for your specific needs. If a CEREC restoration is recommended, your tooth will undergo a preparation for the restoration. An optical impression of your tooth will be constructed. This high resolution optical impression will be utilized for producing a ceramic restoration that fits well inside the preparation.

An all-porcelain block is then placed in a milling chamber and a milled restoration is complete in just 15 minutes start to finish. The restoration will be tested for proper fit and color. The result is an amazing dental restoration that looks like your natural teeth.

Be sure to ask your dentist if CEREC is right for you.
